When the days are getting longer and the temperature starts to rise, there are many car maintenance procedures that need to be performed.

Sometime in the next six weeks, every car owner who lives in the Northeast should have their tires checked. After you take off your winter chains, take out your pressure gauge and make sure your tires are inflated to the level recommended in your owner’s manual. Tire pressure changes with temperature and should be monitored accordingly.

According to HowStuffWorks.com, an under-inflated tire will inflate outward and put damaging pressure on the sidewalls of the tire. On a particularly hot day, a low-profile tire can blow out unexpectedly, resulting in an extremely dangerous driving situation.

In addition to being a safety concern, an improperly inflated or misaligned tire can cost you money at the pump. Properly inflated tires can increase your car’s fuel economy by up to 3 percent, Kiplinger reports.

After winterizing your tires, take out your hose and thoroughly clean your car’s undercarriage. We’ve all seen what salt can do to the exterior of a well-maintained car, but it can be even more damaging to the underside of a car if not removed properly. Salt with corrosion slowly corrodes essential parts of your car and will make your engine and transmission overheat.

In general, the best way to keep your car healthy during the spring and summer is to keep your engine as cool as possible. After changing the coolant and coolant fluid, be sure to check all of the hoses and belts that connect your vehicle’s most vital components.

Visually check all of your belts for cracks and damage, and make sure the rubber material is firm and hasn’t started to split into different layers, according to the news source. The risk of belt failure tends to increase after 36,000 miles.

Finally, check and clean your battery. Although dead batteries are usually associated with winter conditions, the summer heat will speed up the chemical reaction inside the battery, causing it to charge more. Cleaning your battery with a paste of baking soda can greatly extend its life.

Although there are still a few weeks of winter left, it’s never too early to start thinking about getting your car ready for the upcoming season.
