My dear sister, Maria Barbara, did you hear the news? JS obtained permission to go to L\u00fcbeck to hear the famous organist, Dietrich Buxtehude at St. Mary’s. He had been talking about this trip for a long time and now the city council gave him four weeks during Advent to go to L\u00fcbeck. Of course, he has asked our cousin, Johann Ernst, to take his place here at Neukirche, so the music will go on there as usual. JS told me he was going to walk 200 miles to hear Buxtehude and his Advent Abendmusik concerts.<\/p>\n
Finally, when I had almost given up hope and began to ponder the validity of the rumor that Johann was going to marry the old Herr Buxtehude’s daughter, Anna Margareta, so that he could obtain a position as organist at L\u00fcbeck, he returned. Do you realize that he has been gone for sixteen weeks from his post at Neukirche? Let me tell you, the authorities have known how long Johann Sebastian has been gone and they are furious. They argue and argue with JS but he does not apologize for his behavior and the length of his absence. And why should he really, our cousin Johann Ernst filled in nicely at Neukirche while he was gone.<\/p>\n
Maria Barbara, were you in church yesterday? Did you hear what our js played? I think it was an organ piece with our favorite chorus “How Brightly Shines the Morningstar” hidden in all those different-sounding sections somewhere. Our sedate old people really didn’t like they did it? I think our JS learned a lot from Herr Buxtehude and Herr Scheidt while at Lubeck, right?<\/p>\n
Then to make matters worse, did you hear the accompaniment hymn he played on LOBT GOTT, IHR CHRISTEN? My God, it was hard to sing that hymn with that wild accompaniment, if I do say so myself. Why did I hear people complaining all around us. They were really confused. Some even said they couldn’t hear the melody. I imagine all those new fanged frills, they wouldn’t go with all those serious-faced guys.<\/p>\n
Maria Barbara, please tell me you were not the woman someone heard singing to the accompaniment of the JS members in the church choir loft that day? If that’s you, you’re in big trouble! First, you’re a woman upstairs to the choir and second, horror of horror, you’ve even been heard singing in the choir loft! Just think of the mess you have now created for our dear Johann Sebastian, and when things are starting to settle down a bit. What were you thinking?<\/p>\n
Did you hear he’s looking for another job? And why does Johan need a different job? So he can finally settle down and what? Shall I marry you, Maria Barbara? Is that what you think, little sister?<\/p>\n
