P. Mexicana Magic Mushrooms are one of the rare mushrooms that can produce psilocybin enriched sclerotia also referred to as “magic truffles”.

Sclerotia are small nuggets of hardened fungal mycelium that grow under the soil and contain food reserves.  It is a survival mechanism for the fungi. If conditions get bad and the surrounding mycelia network gets damaged or dies, the sclerotia lies dormant for the conditions to be favorable again and then sends out new mycelium from the sclerotia to continue the life cycle.   Please note, in nature, the Jalisco strain is a poor sclerotia producer but an excellent fruiter.

Sclerotia in general contain less water than mushrooms; around 75 percent compared to around 90 percent. On a fresh weight basis sclerotia may be actually more potent than many common psychedelic mushroom species, but this relationship switches once both the mushrooms and sclerotia have been properly dried due to the difference in moisture content.

There is no exact value on what quantity psychoactive chemicals are present in this mushroom. In their descriptions, Heim and Hoffman reported 0.25% psilocybin and 0.15% psilocin we found in P. Mexicana. Which makes this species relatively weaker in comparison to the other Psilocybe species such as P. cubensis and P. azurescens.  However, it should be clearly noted that the potency of any given mushroom is dependent on the state of the mushroom(raw vs dried), mode of consumption, individual physiologic sensitivity as well as on the methods and the environment of growth.
